Notes from SWATT meeting

 Hello SWATT,

Here are the action items/notes from the SWATT meeting on Sept 21 (sorry it’s taken me so long to get this out).  Thanks for those attending:  Randy Y., Kevin C., Gerald T., Jim G., Charlie R., Cody P., Jim B., Jeremy C., Jim S., Rick G., Clint S., Jack E., Cory S.

SWATT Meeting

Sept 21st , 2010

10AM to 10:30AM REDS-Demonstration, Discussion and Update (including PowerSchool, SIS, USOE Data Display and Cognos Reports)-Cory, Clint, Scott, Charlie, Jim B. Lawrence, and Ken K.)

As we develop a regional report that will include GPA (Grades), CRT and Attendance we will have an issue because the districts in the region use different course codes.  Cory was asked to look/find a solution for this.

Washington District has done a ton of work on this, thanks….

All six districts in the region now have functional reports in their SIS systems (PowerSchool and SIS2000).

10:30AM to 11AM-Regional Web Services-Joomla, Google Sites, E-mail Address, etc.-Clint, Cory, Jack and Scott

SWATT asked that the SEDC technology team look at implementing the Concrete web-content publishing system to help those school that are not able to use Joomla (Joomla seems to be a little hard for some school personnel use).  Concrete seems to be easier.  Clint, Cody and Randy are getting together on Oct 6th to layout the ground work for this solution.  Cory will present this to the board as a service that we will add/provide for the schools in the region.

It was agreed that all schools in the region should have teacher and staff e-mail contact information listed/available on their school web site.  Let SEDC (Clint or Kelly) now how we can help with this.  Also, let SEDC now how we can help move school web sites along (seems we still have some work to do).

11AM to 11:30AM CUTS Update (What Certification Training?, Who? Date?, Location?, etc.)-Cory and Jack

SWATT has purchased hours of training from Hew Horizons and on-line Cisco training from TTC.  We will be coordinating this training over the next 12 months or so.  The focus will be to send 2 techs from the region to trainings in SLC and they will work on becoming certified as well as coming back to the region and teaching the rest of us.  This training will include:  MS Server 2008 Cert, MS SQL Cert, Hacking/Security, Deployment Solutions, etc.

SWATT purchased training from UEN as well, this includes forensics and Cisco switch training, these training will take place in Feb/March time line.

SEDC is looking for a district tech person to become Cisco certificate using the TTC on-line training (excellent training opportunity).  Please let Cory know.

11:30AM to 11:45AM-Regional Software Purchases (Lanschool, SmartShield, etc.)-Cory and Jack

All districts can purchase off the Washington LanSchool Contract ($350.00 per lab).

Gerald will test/pilot the SmartShield software and we let us know in Nov.

SWATT agreed we need to continue with the regional Sophos Contract

Jack will look into the MS Essential software package and will report in Nov.

11:45AM to 12PM-Regional Backup (who’s using it) Report-Jack and Cory

12PM to 12:30PM-Lunch

12:30PM to 12:45PM-EETT funding for next year-Rick

Rick said there should be at least $250,000.00 EETT funding for next year, maybe more.  SWATT was interested in writing an application for this funding focused on STEM.  Cory will follow-up with Rick in the Spring/Summer.

12:45PM to 1PM- Assessment grant-Rick

The state received a huge federal grant to create an adaptive test item pool and system.  More to come…

1:15PM to 1:30PM-Video Surveillance Project (review bid process and implementation)-Cory, Jack and Tracy

The SEDC Technology team is implementing a new video surveillance system for the SEDC office in the next week or two.  The idea is to develop a system here at the SEDC office that can be replicated and can be implemented in schools and other educational buildings throughout the region.  With this in mind we needed to select a high-end, robust IP Video System that would not only work for the SEDC building but will scale region wide.   We have received four bids from companies that are leaders in the industry.  Here’s an overview of the bids for the SEDC office (doesn’t include hardware for the server nor wiring for the cameras but does include server software, installation/training, cameras and software maintenance)

RecommendationIt’s the video selection committee’s recommendation to select the solution provided by Red Mountain/ExacqVision for the SEDC office as well as all other new regional implementations for the following reasons:

·       Upfront and ongoing total cost of ownership (Red Mountain provides the lowest cost of ownership)

·       Local support (Red Mountain is located in St. George, Utah)

·       Server software runs on Linux (lower cost of ownership than the Windows solutions)

·       Red Mountain is willing to provide pre-engineering for all needed sites in the region

·       Adding cameras/licenses to the system is the most cost effective solution
